Monthly Movie Matinee: More Than Just a Film – It’s a Connection

by | 13 Jun, 2025 | News

At Nestora Home Care, we believe care is about more than just meeting physical needs.

It’s about nurturing emotional wellbeing, creating meaningful relationships, and bringing joy into everyday life.

That’s the heart behind our Monthly Movie Matinee—a community event proudly hosted in partnership with Rex Cinema in Elland.

This initiative welcomes not only our home care clients, but also older adults, carers, and members of the wider community to enjoy a warm, relaxed afternoon together.

A Simple Idea with a Big Impact

Once a month, we transform an ordinary afternoon into something truly special. Guests are welcomed into the historic comfort of Rex Cinema, where the lights dim and carefully chosen films come to life on the big screen.

We show a variety of feel-good favourites—from timeless classics and musicals to uplifting comedies and nostalgic gems—designed to inspire laughter, spark memories, and bring people together.

But this event is about more than the movies. It’s about connection—sharing a smile, a memory, or even just the quiet comfort of being with others.

Tackling Loneliness, One Seat at a Time

Loneliness is one of the biggest health challenges facing older adults today. According to the Campaign to End Loneliness:

  • Over 50% of people aged 75+ live alone
  • Chronic loneliness increases the risk of early death by 26%
  • It contributes to physical and mental health issues like depression, cognitive decline, and heart disease

And yet, loneliness is often invisible. It’s not always sadness—it can be the absence of conversation, the quiet of an empty room, or the sense of being forgotten.

That’s why gatherings like our Movie Matinee matter. They offer:

  • A reason to get out of the house
  • A safe, welcoming space to be social
  • Something to look forward to
  • A moment of joy and togetherness

Emotional Wellbeing Through Shared Experiences

Laughter, music, and storytelling are powerful tools for mental wellbeing.

We’ve seen how a few hours at the cinema can lift spirits, ease anxiety, and prompt cherished memories. For those living with early-stage dementia, familiar films or music can spark recognition and provide comfort.

For carers, it’s a chance to unwind and reconnect with their loved one in a stress-free setting. And for all of us, it’s a reminder that some of the most meaningful moments come from simply being together.

“The Monthly Movie Matinee is a reminder that the simple act of watching a film together can spark joy, connection, and a feeling of togetherness—proof that sometimes, the most powerful moments come from just being side by side, sharing the experience.”

Everyone Is Welcome

Whether you’re a Nestora client, a family member, a professional carer, a film enthusiast, or someone who values connection—we’d love to see you there.

This isn’t just a movie.

It’s a movement toward a more connected, compassionate community.

Come for the movie. Stay for the connection. Feel the warmth of belonging.
